Fuck, I hate anxiety! And I am sure if you’ve landed here, you pretty much feel the same way…

Wouldn’t it be great if we could all just give up this shit-show of this thing called adulting, and head off to a tropical island to chill, and relax, and just actually breathe for once. In fact, I could probably even do without the island and simply just have a moment to sit outside in the sun on a deck chair, take a deep breath in, sigh it out, and feel like my life is in control.

I am sure that if I had to ask you to think about what makes you anxious, you would probably answer something along the lines of; “everything makes me anxious”. I may even go as far as to say that it probably feels like it’s not one specific thing that makes you feel anxious, it’s just a general state of being. It’s always there… sometimes a little bit louder, or more intense, and other times a little bit softer, or like further in the background. But generally, the feeling of anxiety is always there.

It’s almost as though anxiety is like that annoying kid on the playground that constantly pointed out everything you were doing “wrong” ready to tell on the teacher.

Sometimes you were the unfortunate one caught red handed as they yelled and pointed “I’m going to tell on the teacher”, and other times it was someone else who was feeling their slimy snitchery, but no matter what if that goody-two-shoe-tell-all was anywhere near you or your friends, no fun was being had!
It’s been years though and it feels as though that kid still lives in your head. You can still hear them telling you what you should and shouldn’t be doing. It might even be like that kid has just become someone else in our lives… and this voice in our head is probably just as non-descript and forgettable as the snitch was back then…

You can’t quite put your finger on who or what exactly it is that you’re anxious about, the people on the internet, your family, your friends, your boss, your kids, your neighbors, your partner, the strangers? But when you think about it logically, it doesn’t make sense to feel as anxious as you do at work, at home, in the store, in the gym, wherever… I mean you’re a grown ass adult, right? You are doing scary, hard, grown ass adult shit every day, and yet this adulting thing feels so damn hard.
And when looking at your life with some perspective, this anxiety is not helping, it’s just making things harder. If you could just have a moment without that feeling of spiraling out maybe you would realise that everything is ok.

You can’t quite put your finger on who or what exactly it is that you’re anxious about, the people on the internet, your family, your friends, your boss, your kids, your neighbors, your partner, the strangers? But when you think about it logically, it doesn’t make sense to feel as anxious as you do at work, at home, in the store, in the gym, wherever… I mean you’re a grown ass adult, right? You are doing scary, hard, grown ass adult shit every day, and yet this adulting thing feels so damn hard.

And when looking at your life with some perspective, this anxiety is not helping, it’s just making things harder. If you could just have a moment without that feeling of spiraling out maybe you would realise that everything is ok.

Is everything ok right now? Like in this moment, is there any immediate threat? I’m going to assume no. You’re good, you’re safe, you’re breathing, you even have a moment to yourself.
How does it feel knowing this?

…In control…
…Like you can breathe…

Mmmmm…. This feels so good…

Going out to the store, or the gym, or anywhere people are… feeling calm and confident and relaxed.

Doesn’t that feel so damn good? Maybe a bit weird at first, but you definitely began to feel a slight bit better right?
